What is the easiest way to create a first Draw Steel hero?

Choose the battlefield role and class first as a concept, then complete ancestry, culture, career, and the class's level-by-level choices in the builder. Finish by reviewing the kit, abilities, skills, languages, and sheet values together.

Can I change a default skill?

When a feature grants a skill choice, the builder keeps the default first for convenience but allows another legal option. A skill that is fixed by a feature is displayed as included instead of editable.

Do I need a complication?

No. A complication adds a benefit, drawback, and story hook, but it is optional and does not block completion of the hero.

Creation Order

The guided builder starts with identity choices that can grant traits, languages, skills, and perks, then opens the level-based class decisions. Complete each stage before moving on so later option lists can reflect earlier choices.

  • Ancestry: spend ancestry points, include fixed traits, and finish any trait options.
  • Culture: choose the culture, language, components when required, and granted skills.
  • Career: choose editable skills, languages, the required perk, and an Inciting Incident.
  • Class: choose characteristics, order or subclass, domains when relevant, kits, perks, skills, and abilities at each level.
  • Complication and details: add the optional story hook, name, pronouns, and notes, then review the complete hero.

What Each Choice Changes

Use this distinction when two options both fit the same character concept.

ChoiceMain Effect on the Hero
AncestryPhysical or supernatural traits plus selectable ancestry benefits.
CultureLanguage, upbringing, environment, organization, and culture-based skills.
CareerPast profession, skills, languages, perk access, and Inciting Incident.
ClassBattlefield role, heroic resource, characteristics, subclass choices, and level features.
KitEquipment style, numeric combat bonuses, and a signature ability when granted.
ComplicationAn optional benefit, drawback, and story pressure for the campaign.

Review Before Play

A legal list of choices is not yet a table-ready hero. Read the final review beside the current character sheet and make sure every number and action can be found quickly.

  • Confirm every required level section shows complete.
  • Check stamina, recoveries, speed, disengage, stability, and kit modifiers.
  • Mark each ability as Main Action, Maneuver, Triggered Action, or another printed type.
  • Record the exact trigger for every triggered ability.
  • Know how the class gains and spends its heroic resource.
