Draw Steel Triggered Actions

Use Draw Steel triggered actions correctly by checking the exact trigger, timing window, targets, per-round availability, free triggers, and opportunity attacks.

What is a triggered action?

A triggered action is an ability or action used when its stated trigger occurs. Confirm the complete trigger and legal target before interrupting or responding to the current event.

How often can I use a triggered action?

A creature normally has one triggered action each round. Free triggered actions follow their own limits and do not use that normal triggered-action availability unless their text says otherwise.

Can a trigger be used after the event is finished?

Only if its timing says so. A trigger that occurs before, when, or after an event creates a different window, so read the trigger sentence literally.

Trigger Check

Pause only long enough to answer these questions, then return to the interrupted turn.

CheckQuestion
EventDid the complete printed trigger actually occur?
TimingDoes the response happen before, during, or after that event?
AvailabilityIs the normal or free triggered action still available?
TargetIs every required target legal at this moment?
ResolutionDoes the response interrupt the event or resolve after it finishes?

Opportunity Attacks and Other Responses

Opportunity attacks are resolved through their own trigger and movement requirements. Determine whether the creature advanced, shifted, teleported, or was forcibly moved before declaring the response, because those movement types can interact differently.

  • Name the movement or event that might trigger the action.
  • Check reach, line of effect, and target legality.
  • Confirm that the movement type permits the response.
  • Spend the triggered action only when the trigger is valid.
  • Finish the response, then resume the original event.
